Qualification Description

This qualification provides a trade outcome in painting and decorating for residential and commercial construction work.
Occupational titles may include:

Painter and Decorator

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements for painting and decorating differ between States and Territories. Learners must consult the relevant regulatory authority for accurate and up-to-date requirements.

This qualification is suitable for an Australian Apprenticeship pathway.

Completion of the general construction induction training program, specified in the Safe Work Australia Model Code of Practice: Construction Work, is required for anyone carrying out construction work.
Achievement of CPCCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement.

Packaging Rules

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must demonstrate competency in a total of 29 units of competency, consisting of:

  • 26 core units

  • 3 elective units

Elective units of competency may be selected as follows:

  • 3 units from the listed electives, or

  • 2 units from the listed electives and 1 unit from any endorsed Training Package or accredited course, provided the unit:

    • contributes to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome, and

    • aligns with the AQF level of this qualification.

Pathways into the qualification CPC20120 – Certificate II in Construction
Pathways from the qualification Learners who successfully complete this qualification may progress into further studies such as: • CPC40120 – Certificate IV in Building and Construction
Employment Pathways Graduates may find employment in painting and decorating industries. *It is not, however, intended to indicate that an individual will gain immediate employment on completion of this qualification.
Course Duration Full time: over a period of 54 weeks o 54 weeks of delivery is inclusive of 4 weeks holiday breaks. o Training support hours include the assistance provided after the classroom session or on request by learners either via face-to-face or phone, skype or email to support learners to undertake the learning activities and other academic matters. o Guided Learning hours are monitored by Trainers/Assessors. Refer to the Training and delivery structure table in Section 19 for the breakdown of delivery hours.
