Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competency (RCC)…
Registered Training Organisations (RTO) must offer to all students an opportunity
to seek Recognition (RPL), under the Australian Qualifications Training Framework (AQTF) standards.
For eligible participants of the Productivity Places Program
Participants can achieve Recognised Prior Learning (RPL), either through having previously undertaken training, work practice, or through their life experiences which may be relevant to the particular course of study they undertake. RPL is the recognition of skills and knowledge you may have gained through your working life or may have participated in, in day-to-day activities you may be involved in, such as volunteer services.
The self assessment form does not provide a participant with automatic recognition.
In some instances, a student may be able to provide “sufficient” evidence for part of a unit they are seeking RPL credit for; however, are unable to provide evidence of “currency” for the skill. The self assessment form is part of the enrolling process, where a student can may make a judgment of their skills and if the are able to provide “sufficient and current” evidence of the skill.
Questions and Answers for RPL / RCC
| Q |
Are there any fees / costs involved for RPL. |
| A |
No. For eligible students you will also be recognised as having enrolled in the full qualification. |
| |
|
| Q |
Can I seek RPL for only part of my course? |
| A |
Yes |
| |
|
| Q |
What if I am not granted successful RPL? |
| A |
In most cases, we are able to provide you access to attend a course to complete any units. This can depend upon your location. |
| |
|
| Q |
Do I have to seek recognition? |
| A |
No. Many students may recognise that they would more than likely be able to perform part or all of a skill, however, is unable to provide “sufficient and current” evidence. |
| |
|
| Q |
Can I do a RPL Self Assessment on the phone? |
| A |
Yes. |
|
| Q |
Can I seek recognition against a whole qualification? |
| A |
Yes. If you feel you have the “skills and knowledge”; and are able provide “sufficient and current” evidence. |
| |
|
| Q |
Do I have to complete a RPL Self Assessment? |
| A |
Yes. However, if you would simply like to attend the whole course (attend classes with a trainer), you would
simply circle NO on the form, as this would indicate that you do wish to seek recognition (RPL) for a unit. |
| |
|
| Q |
Can I seek RPL and complete any parts I’m not granted recognition for, by doing the course on-line? |
| A |
Yes. We are pleased to assist you. |
| |
|
| Q |
I would just like to attend classes with a trainer, can I do this? |
| A |
Yes. Simply circle NO on the self assessment form; this indicates that you do not wish to seek recognition (RPL) |

Credit Transfer (CT)…
What is Credit Transfer?
Credit transfer is where you may have previously completed a qualification, or a stand alone unit of competency, within a qualification, and the unit of competency can be recognised as being identical to a unit of competency within a qualification you wish to complete. Credit Transfer (CT) can sometimes also be considered, Recognition of Current Competency (RCC).
When can credit transfer be applied in courses / qualifications?
Example
Imagine you worked in the Hospitality Industry as a bar person, making fabulous cocktails. To work in the bar, you would be required to hold the accreditation: THHBFB09B Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA). This is known to be a “Unit of Competency”. This unit of competency makes up only part of the units with a full qualification.
Now, imagine if you had successfully completed your RSA course and were granted an accreditation for the unit of competency, THHBFB09B. Would you necessarily expect to have to complete this part of the course again? You have already successfully completed this unit.
In this instance, you can be provided with a Credit Transfer (CT).
When can credit transfer not be applied?
Credit transfer can not be applied when the unit of competency can not be recognised as being “current” to meet all of the underpinning skills and knowledge that apply to the unit a competency.
Example
Imagine you worked in the Hospitality Industry as a bar person, making fabulous cocktails. To work in the bar, you would be required to hold the accreditation: Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA). And, that 5 yrs ago, you had successfully completed a course for this “unit of competency”. However, you now have not worked in the Hospitality Industry for some time and you have not completed another Responsible Service of Alcohol course. Can the unit of competency be “Credit Transferred”?
In this instance, No. Why? Because the “Unit of Competency” would not be able to be recognised to meet the “current” requirements that would be applied to be granted “Credit Transfer (CT)”. We must question the “currency” of the Credit Transfer. Read more….
How would you have “current”, “skills and knowledge” if you have not worked in the industry?
How have you kept up with “current” and new legislation (which forms part of the requirements of the current version of the unit of competency?)
Example
You completed your Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), 5 yrs ago. At this time, the unit of competency had a code, THHBFB09A.
The current unit of competency code for Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) is now, THHBFB09B.
In this instance, the ending letter of the code, (A) is not current, whilst (B) is current. An automatic Credit Transfer can not be granted in this instance.
When can a Credit Transfer (CT) be granted?
A Credit Transfer (CT) can be granted when a unit of competency can be recognised as meeting the current requirements for the underpinning skills and knowledge required within a unit of competency.
Example
You completed a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course last year. The unit of competency code was THHBFB09B. You have enrolled into a Hospitality course and this same unit makes up part of the course. You would not have to complete the unit again; you could be granted a Credit Transfer for the unit, as it would be recognised as “current”. You could simply provide the accreditation you were awarded at the time, for a Credit Transfer.
I have completed a course recently, can I apply for any Credit Transfers (CT)
Under the Program Guidelines, a participant may receive up to a maximum of 25% Credit Transfer when enrolling into a qualification, as part of the eligibility criteria of the Productivity Places Program.
Example (not being eligible)
A full qualification may be made up of 10 different units of competency. You could apply for up to 25% Credit Transfer. However, if you have
successfully completed more units of competency, and they are identical to the units of competency being offered as part of the qualification you are enrolling in, you will not be eligible to participate in the course.
Example (being eligible)
If you have completed, for instance, only 2 units, and these make up part of the units within the qualification your are enrolling in, you would meet the Program requirements and would remain eligible. You would be within the 25% maximum Credit Transfer that may be granted.
